Wang Shuhe: The Founder of TCM Pulse Diagnosis

Wang Shuhe (c. 201—280年) was an ancient Chinese physician who lived in the Wei & Jin Dynasty. He made two great contributions to TCM: Sorting out ""Shang Han Za Bing Lun" which is a great books written by Zhang Zhongjing and writing first medical book about pulse diagnosis.


Wang Shuhe was promoted to court physician when he was 32. He took advantage of this to read a lot of medical works. Based on the research of pulse diagnosis by famous doctors like Bia Que, Hua Tuo and Zhang Zhongjing, Wang Shuhe wrote Maijing (The Pulse Classics), the first work systematically describing the pulse and its importance in the diagnosis of disease. According to the changes of physiology and pathology, he identified 24 different types of pulses. He made sphygmology an offical science in diagnosing disease henceafter.
