Wuhan No. 1 Hospital is also called Wuhan Integrated TCM & Western Medicine Hospital. The Hospital was founded in 1927 and was initially named “Hankou Municipal Hospital”, which was renamed Wuhan No. 1 Hospital in May 1949 and was nominated as “WUHAN HOSPITAL OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE AND WESTERN MEDICINE” by Wuhan Municipal People’s Government. It is a large-sized comprehensive hospital integrating medical service, scientific research and teaching, as an affiliated hospital of traditional Chinese and western medicine under Tongji Medical School of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Hubei Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is also one of the largest-scaled Class III Rank A hospitals of traditional Chinese and western medicine. The hospital is headquartered in Qiaokou District covering an area of 75 mu and has established Hanxi Branch, Wuchang Branch, Rehabilitation Center and Physical Examination Center, Yimei Orthopedic Hospital and a traditional Chinese and western medicine preparation center covering a land of 100 mu. There are 1600 beds registered in the hospital, which provides services to over 1.89 million outpatients/times per year and to 47,000 inpatients/times per year.

Now the hospital has 2026 employees, of whom 82% are professional medical workers , 230 have senior professional title ,39 doctorial and master tutors, 7 experts enjoying subsidies of the State Council, 5 experts for inheriting of famous traditional Chinese medicine all over China and 4 famous experts of traditional Chinese in Hubei Province.

The Hospital has a full variety of special fields, 32 clinic section offices and 14 medical technical section offices, two key specialized departments under construction of traditional Chinese medicine in State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine(dermatological department of traditional Chinese medicine and spleen and stomach department of traditional Chinese medicine ), two national key specialized departments (dermatological department of traditional Chinese and western medicine and nephropathy department of traditional Chinese and western medicine), three national key specialized departments under construction (spleen and stomach department of traditional Chinese and western medicine, encephalopathy department of traditional Chinese and western medicine, and acupuncture department) and three clinic key specialized departments in Hubei (dermatology department and nephropathy internal medicine and digestion internal medicine). The Hospital attaches great importance to scientific research. It has six medical laboratories ,one of which has reached national laboratory standard Class Ⅲ for scientific research in Chinese traditional medicine, and five have reached standard Class Ⅱ.The heart and brain cardiovascular laboratory is a key laboratory (Class B) under Hubei Provincial Department of Health. “Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Clinic Application Method Laboratory” has become national key laboratory for medicine research under “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”; “Dermatitis Infection Laboratory” has become “Hubei Provincial Infective Dermatitis Clinic Research Center”. “Dermatology department” has become “Untoward reaction monitoring organization of cosmetics affiliated to Ministry of Health”.

Improving the medical quality and service quality, the Hospital focuses on “renewing by means of science and education, and building a clinic research-oriented hospital” as a key in the future development.
