Founded in 1934, the Hunan University of Chinese Medicine was previously known as Hunan China Medical college. In 1960, its name changed to Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine which was merged with Hunan Academy of Chinese Medicine, and approved by Minstry of Education in 2006, the merger was changed to the current name-Hunan University of Chinese Medicine.

It consists of 12 colleges, one independent college, three departments, 10 research institutes, seven centers, a library, 11 affiliated hospitals, two school-run joint ventures. Currently it has 16179 full-time students(including 4719 students in Xiangxin College), among which there are 1631 Masters and Ph.D. graduates and 6068 adult education students.
